What a home interior costs in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar

Five things set the cost of a home interior: the area, the scope, the boards and finishes, the hardware and the stone. This guide explains each one, how designers charge, and what a quotation should show you before you sign.

How designers price their work

Interior designers quote in one of three ways.

  • Per square foot of carpet area, with materials included. Easy to compare between designers, as long as you check what the rate covers.
  • Item by item: the kitchen per running foot, wardrobes per square foot of shutter, the false ceiling per square foot. You see where each rupee goes.
  • A design fee, as a percentage of the project or a rate per square foot, with the building quoted separately or handed to your own contractor.

What moves the price

  • Area and scope. A 3 BHK costs more than a 2 BHK, and a home that gets false ceilings, new flooring and loose furniture costs more than one that gets a kitchen and wardrobes alone.
  • Boards. Boiling-water-proof (BWP) plywood costs more than moisture-resistant (MR) plywood or HDHMR. You need it only where water reaches: the sink unit, the utility, the bathroom vanities.
  • Finishes. Laminate costs least. Acrylic, PU paint and veneer cost more and need more care.
  • Hardware. Soft-close hinges, drawer channels, lift-up flaps and kitchen baskets add up across a home, and branded hardware costs more.
  • Stone. Granite usually costs less than quartz, and Italian marble costs the most.
  • Lighting. Each metre of cove or profile light adds fittings and electrical work.

What a quotation should show

  • Each room and each item, with its size.
  • The board and the finish for every item.
  • The hardware, by make.
  • What the price leaves out, such as appliances, civil work and decor.
  • Tax, on a line of its own.
  • The payment stages and the schedule.

Design fees, 3D designs and site visits

Some designers charge for the first visit or for the 3D designs, and others include them in the project. Ask before you book, so you know what the first meeting costs.

Questions about cost

Is GST extra on interior work?

GST applies to interior work. Check whether a quotation includes it in each line or adds it at the end, so you compare like with like.

Can I do the interior in stages?

You can start with the kitchen and the wardrobes and add loose furniture, curtains and decor later. Plan the whole home at the start, so the later pieces match the first ones.
